Living to Serve With Mackay FFA

By Damien Willman, Chapter Treasurer, Mackay FFA

Back in August, I attended a Chapter Officer Retreat. While I was there, I wrote a Living to Serve grant application for our FFA Chapter. Frequently in the city of Mackay, the fire hydrants get buried under several feet of snow, forcing our firefighters, city maintenance, and local highway department to spend valuable time trying to find the hydrants and dig them out. We wanted to make it easier for the firefighters to find the hydrants, so we decided that we could put metal flags next to the fire hydrants that would stick up through the snow. The grant I wrote was applying for the funds to construct those flags.

In September, I was informed that the grant had been approved and that we had received the funds. I am happy to have learned how to write grants. It is a valuable skill that I will continue to use. It is also great to see how acquiring this grant will improve the safety in the community first-hand.

These photos are of Damien and last year’s Living to Serve project where Mackay FFA repainted the fire hydrants in town.
